1. What is the purpose of the Department of English Language and Literature?


The aim of our department is to produce graduates who specialize in English language and literature. In this way, it is aimed to raise individuals who can use English extremely competently and who can recognize and process Western culture and values. It is aimed that individuals who complete the Süleyman Demirel University English Language and Literature Program will be able to establish relationships between different disciplines and cultures and demonstrate in-depth approaches to social and cultural phenomena.

 


2. Which faculty is the Department of English Language and Literature located in and how many years of education does it offer?


Department of English Language and Literature is a department within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Süleyman Demirel University. The teaching period is 4 years and the language of instruction is English.

 


3. What kind of courses are included in the curriculum of the Department of English Language and Literature?


Throughout their education at the Department of English Language and Literature, students are offered courses covering different periods of English language, literature and culture. These courses include courses such as text analysis, novels, poetry, written and oral translation, criticism and cultural theories, mythology, American literature and cultural studies. Our students also have the opportunity to choose a second foreign language course. Thanks to the other elective courses they can take, our students will also gain competence in fields closely related to literature, such as translation, theatre, cultural studies and psychology.

 


5. What are your differences from other English Language and Literature departments?


Süleyman Demirel University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of English Language and Literature has an experienced, well-equipped and successful academic staff. It has innovative course programs that are suitable for interdisciplinary work and allow specialization in different subjects.


Many international students also receive education in our department, which has a master's degree program as well as undergraduate education.


As a department, we emphasize the importance of scientific and cultural activities and encourage our students to participate in these activities. Our department organized Shakespeare in Turkey Festival, English Language and Literature Conference, International Language, Literature and Culture Conference, Stylistics Symposium, etc. It also hosted many national and international events. In addition, Noam Chomsky, one of the world's most famous linguists and philosophers, 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature winner Abdulrazak Gurnah, literary historian Stephen Greenblatt, one of our country's most important translators. Prof. Özdemir Nutku, founder of MIT Global Shakespeares Archive, Prof. Peter S. Donaldson, State Theater General Manager Mustafa Kurt, Shakespeare Birthplace Trust Foundation Honorary President Sir Stanley Wells and many scientists, researchers, literary figures, translators, writers and experts were hosted in our department.


Our department is proud of being the department that sends the most students abroad on a faculty and university basis. Every semester, many of our students study in different countries with Erasmus+ and Mevlana Programs. In addition, we have many students who are enrolled in double major and minor programs in our department.
