TYMBRIADA
THE ANCIENT CITY OF TYMBRIADA
Prof. Dr. Fikret ÖZCAN
The excavations began in the ancient city of Tymbriada in 2020. Tymbriada is located 3.5 km northwest of Aksu district. Most of the structures in the city remained under the ground and there are few visible structures except for a few terrace walls in the north-south direction and some building remains since the area where the city was founded is inclined from east to west starting from the western slope of the Acropolis (Asartepe).
Excavations and the scientific investigations revealed that the houses were mostly along the south side of the city. There are two watchtowers or control towers close to the modern stabilized road in the south of the city. The third watchtower is in the northwest of the city and enables to observe a wide area. There is a partially well-preserved fortification wall and an entrance to the north of the city. An ancient road going from the city entrance in the north to the direction of Sofular is partially preserved. On the southern slopes of Asartepe the city walls belonging to the Hellenistic Period can be partially traced. There is a well-preserved cistern at a depth of about 4.20 m at the northern end of the acropolis.
